Jeannie Balenger, MS, NCC, CRC
Hi, I’m Jeannie (like in a bottle). I work with adults experiencing shame, self-criticism, anxiety, avoidance, depression, trauma, grief, bicultural and political stress, and men’s issues. I also tend to work well with people who use humor to avoid tough emotions. Additionally, I’m a Certified Clinical Rehabilitation Counselor, with specialized training in supporting people living with chronic illness and disability.
If we work together, you can expect a collaborative partnership built on trust, empathy, humor, authenticity, and a safe and supportive space where you feel comfortable being a little uncomfortable—because stepping a little outside of our comfort zone can lead to the growth and change we’re seeking. Perhaps you are outside of your comfort zone now by considering therapy.
I work from a psychodynamic and attachment-based perspective, which means I believe many of our current struggles and defenses stem from our past relationships and experiences. I also integrate existential therapy, ACT, CBT, IFS approach, and Polyvagal theory to give us the flexibility to work in the way that feels most helpful for you.
I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling (2024) and my Bachelor’s degree (2021) in Sociology and Global Studies (Latin American focus) from Portland State University. My work at the PSU Community Counseling Clinic and years of working in both restaurants and higher education, gave me the privilege of supporting people from many different backgrounds, including those navigating poverty, addiction, immigration/deportation concerns, disability, and systemic barriers. These experiences, along with my own experiences of growing up in a single-parent home with parental addiction and incarceration, have significantly influenced my decision to become a counselor.
Outside of work, I enjoy banter and social commentary with friends, starting several books and rarely finishing any, pop culture, and improving my second-grade level Spanish.
Making sure we are a good fit is important in therapy. Please reach out for a free 15-20 minute consultation, or email me with any questions you may have.
